Austin Vida presents Barrio Bash – Day 2 – at The Sahara Lounge

March 14, 2014 By Ian Morales

AV Barrio Bash Mar 15 webThis year we are presenting a two day Barrio Bash at popular East Austin venue, The Sahara Lounge. On our second day, Mar. 15, we turn up the amps and just freakin’ rock. We have two of our Austin-based faves playing with some national heavyweights. The best part? It is absolutely free.

Austin’s Los Federales open the show at noon, celebrating the release of their new EP, Culebra. Mexico City blues rock duo The Copper Gamins follow at 1 p.m. before heading to mega music fest, Vive Latino, in their hometown at the end of this month. Fans of The White Stripes and/or The Black Keys will want to check them out as soon as possible.

New York City-based “future-rock” band Outernational should be a familiar face as they co-headlined at Pachanga Latino Music Festival in 2012, playing before Calle 13. They were nationally recognized early in their career when Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello said “Outernational could be the next Rage Against the Machine.” The revolutionary rockers perform at 2 p.m.

New Austin-based electro-punk buzz band BLXPLTN (pronounced like Black-sploy-ta-tion) is performing at 3 p.m. BLXPLTN is the side project of Mighty Mountain frontman, Jonathan Horstmann. He is joined by TaSzlin Muerte (electro drums, vocals) and Lil K Big Q (guitar, screams, Boricua). You may not know the name now, but you won’t forget them once you see them live.

Headlining our showcase is the iconic AJ Davila, frontman of garage-punk faves Davila 666. Davila is here in Austin this week in support of his Nacional Records debut, Terror Amor. On Terror Amor, AJ Davila brings together the guitar-fuzz of ‘60s garage, the raw energy of ’70s punk and the irrepressibly catchy choruses of ’80s pop. Davila performs at 4 p.m.

Remember too that this year our friends at Pachanga Latino Music Festival have provided us with a pair of tickets to giveaway to one of our Barrio Bash attendees. Pachanga takes place on May 10 at Fiesta Gardens and features Mexican pop-star Julieta Venegas, Venezuelan rockers La Vida Bohéme and more. All you have to do to enter your name in the drawing is RSVP for Barrio Bash Vol. V below. Only entries with your full name and a valid email address will be eligible to win. We will email the winner on Saturday at noon on Mar. 15. Our winner must be in attendance to claim their tickets.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 11 a.m. Music starts at noon. 21+ are welcome. No badge or wristband required. Free parking. Visit the official Facebook event page here.

[3/13] Preview: Nacional Records & Friends official SXSW showcase

March 12, 2014 By Ian Morales

Nacional Showcase Mar 13 Thursday, Mar. 13, U.S.- based Latin Alternative record label Nacional Records will present their official South by Southwest (SXSW) showcase at The Palm Door on 6th. The (almost) annual showcase will include four of the label’s official SXSW artists along with two “friends” in the Latin Alternative scene. Two of their artists are household names to many in Austin while the other two are familiar faces from other popular bands you’re likely to recognize.

The showcase headliners include Mexican electronic DJ duo Nortec Collective’s Bostich + Fussible and the multi-Grammy nominated Ana Tijoux from Chile. Both are previous SXSW performers and Pachanga Fest alumni. Tijoux is performing in support of her upcoming album, Vengo, which will be released on Mar. 18.

The other two Nacional artists on the showcase include Thievery Corporation’s touring vocalist, Natalia Clavier. Her critically-acclaimed solo album Lumen was produced by Austin-based producer Adrian Quesada (former Grupo Fantasma, Brownout). AJ Davila, frontman of Puerto Rican garage rock icons Davila 666, is performing in support of his Nacional records released solo album, Terror Amor.

LA-based singer-songwriter Irene Diaz and Puerto Rican indie-pop faves Fofé Y Los Fetiches round out the bill. The Palm Door on 6th is located at 508 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 8 p.m. Nacional Records is providing free t-shirts and other giveaways to those who arrive early while supplies last. This showcase is available to those with SXSW badges and wristbands. If capacity allows, non-badge holders can pay a cover at the door which is TBD. Visit the official Facebook event page here.
