Brown Sabbath is the alter ego of Austin-based psych-funk collective Brownout who delve deep into reinterpreting the catalog of metal godfathers, Black Sabbath.  The full-length album, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, features special appearances from The Black Angels’ Alex Maas and primary vocals from Alex Marrero. Brown Sabbath remains true to the darkness, bombast and fuzz of Sabbath’s sound, while re-imagining the music with greasy Afro-Latin horns, hypnotic percussion and psyched-out, rare-groove improv.

On Friday, Feb. 27, Brownout will be performing as Brown Sabbath in Austin at ACL Live. The best part? We have two tickets to giveaway to one of our lucky Austin Vida readers.

The giveaway will be conducted as a raffle from our email list. Just click “enter the drawing” below after submitting your full name and email address. Only submissions with full names will be officially entered. We will pick the winner from these submissions before 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, the day before the show. Recap: Rodrigo y Gabriela at ACL Live

October 18, 2014 By Angela Maldonado

“We don’t have a fucking set list tonight.”

Rodrigo of Rodrigo y Gabriela said this over the audience’s cheers and yells at Thursday’s show at ACL Live.

The Mexico City duo kept their performance intimate and passionate…exactly like their latest album 9 Dead Alive.

The fourth studio album is stripped down to the duo’s furious guitar playing…and that’s exactly what you got at their show.

“If you want to hear a song, say it,” Rodrigo says. The crowd starts shouting and both oblige, playing snippets here and there before finally settling into a song.

Rodrigo, Gabriela and two guitars made this the most accessible show of theirs in recent years.

In their last tour visit to Stubbs in 2012, you got the full light show, big stage set up. This time around, fans were treated to new songs, old favorites. One special moment was their amazing cover of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” followed by an endearing story of how a young Gabriela discovered Metallica.

“My sister was dating this metal guy…and you never see his face, and he gave her this tape…”

She the then met Rodrigo and they’ve been playing together ever since.

Their history shows on stage, the whole performance felt like you were watching two master guitarists have an intense jam session.

If you want to experience the duo distilled, see them during this tour or check the new album.

Los Lobos tape fourth ‘Austin City Limits’ episode to air this fall

April 16, 2014 By Vicky Garza

Two music legends –Austin City Limits and Los Lobos – celebrated 40th Monday evening at ACL Live. A large crowd turned up for the taping despite the unusually cold spring weather, and many were able to warm themselves up quick once the Grammy-award winning band took the stage by dancing.

Austin City Limits Producer Terry Lickona kicked off the night by saying how stunned he is that the show is still going strong after 40 years. He then introduced the band, playing the Austin City Limits stage for the fifth time.

The five members of Los Lobos, along with a drummer and a percussionist, graced the stage for over two hours, singing both English and Spanish favorites. The occasional grito always received a cheer in response from the crowd, and when the band commanded the audience to cumbia, they really got moving.

We got to see the fun side of Los Lobos, the sensitive side, and the perfectionist side. Late in the set, they played tribute to conjunto star Flaco Jiménez – who had just undergone back surgery – by performing his song “Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio.” When they weren’t happy with the first take, they did it again, and then again; third time was the charm. Fortunately, the crowd was as enthusiastic every time as if it was the first.

The East Los Angeles natives also played their ’80s song “Set Me Free (Rosa Lee),” which appears on their 2013 live album, Disconnected in New York City. The one song the rock and roll veterans did not play was their cover of Richie Valens’ “La Bamba,” which personally left me a little disappointed since that is how I first discovered the band. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining; I had a great time!

After a couple of encore songs, the band left the stage, but not before thanking the crowd with a huge “Gracias!”

For people who were not able to get tickets to the taping, Austin City Limits live streamed the show on its YouTube page. The broadcast episode will air on PBS Stations later this fall.
