[7/30] Preview: Hillside Concert Series – A-T Boyz, Cacy Savala, Joe Bravo and Ruben Ramos

July 30, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Tonight the Hillside Concert Series continues with some of Austin’s favorite Tejano acts. This installment of the east side family-friendly series at the A.B. Cantu Pan-American Recreation Center will features Austin’s own Los A-T Boyz with special guest Cacy Savala, followed by legendary performers Ruben Ramos and Joe Bravo.

Los A-T Boyz, previously known as Alma Tejana, is driven by la familia Rodriguez. Brothers Raphael (saxophone) and Paquito Rodriguez (accordion) masterfully work the stage along with their father Paco Rodriguez on bajo sexto and brother Fernando on drums and percussion. Rounding out the lineup are Raymond Garza (keys and accordion), Adam Garza (bass), Omar Acuna (congas), and Chris Rivera (harmony vocals). Their sound draws from almost every genre, allowing their creative spirit and radiant energy to shine through during every performance and on every recording. Almost everyone sings, and they all love to perform. Joining them onstage will be super-talented Cacy Savala, who is now enjoying a successful solo career after a long Grammy-winning tenure with Tejano legend Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz.

Closing out the show will be two legendary Tejano singers Ruben Ramos and Joe Bravo. With a career spanning over five decades, two Grammy awards, and countless albums and collaborations, the handsome, charismatic, silver-haired Ramos is known for his soulful voice and suave persona. Back in the 1980s, Ramos scored a hit with “El Gato Negro,” which quickly became his nickname among fans and musicians alike. Joe Bravo is just as well-known and adored, and ever since beginning his career with the Sunglows in the 1960s, Joe Bravo has been a fan favorite and frequent collaborator with fellow Tejano music legends. Bravo has long been known for his smooth voice that fits perfectly with the big brass orquesta sound. Among his many hits is the chicano classic slow jam “Que Casualidad,” a staple for weddings, quinceañeras, and other family gatherings throughout Texas.

The party will continue after the show at the Blue Moon Bar and Grill at Oltorf and I-35, along with other local favorites as well.

Long story short: Family-friendly fun at a free showcase featuring Tejano pioneers along with the voices of tomorrow.
