Friday July 3, the holiday weekend starts off with a conjunto shoot out at Texas Club Bar and Grill. The southeast Austin Tejano club will welcome back Kyle’s own Conjunto powerhouse Conjunto Romo for a double bill with the sharp-dressed men from Elsa, Los Badd Boyz Del Valle.
Considered rising stars on the Conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional Conjunto sound and have developed a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.
The Badd Boyz have enjoyed immense popularity in the past few years with a couple of hit singles and albums, earning them a growing fan base that reaches from their home turf to Houston, where hardcore conjunto has exploded amongst a younger crowd. In 2011, the guys won the award for Best New Artist-Group at the Tejano Music Awards and scored a big hit with “Eres Clicka.” Their latest single, “Una No Es Ninguna,” was just released last month.
Long story short: SQUEEZEBOX! Suits! Polkas! Puro conjunto to the max. There won’t be a sax or a synthesizer in sight.
The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The doors open at 7 p.m., cover is $10 all night. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.
