Since the late 1990s, A.B. Quintanilla, brother of the late Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez, has been turning the Tejano world on its ear with his own interpretation of the genre, mixing in elements from hip-hop, R&B and Mexican cumbia. The infectious rhythms borne of that innovation and flavor, along with top-notch production, earned Quintanilla and his previous group, Los Kumbia Kings, the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tropical Regional Mexican Album.
After the breakup with Los Kumbia Kings, Quintanilla struck gold again with his new venture, Los Kumbia All Starz including Austin singer and accordionist J.R. Gomez. Songs like “Chiquilla,” “Hipnotika,” and “Mentirosa” were massively popular and helped to further usher in the cumbia era in Tejano music. Their latest album Blanco y Negro, featuring the single “Solo,” was released in the fall of 2013.
Long story short: This group hasn’t played Austin in quite some time and fans of this type of cumbia-heavy, hip-hop Tejano are advised to not miss this one! Packed dance floor for sure. Maybe even get there early…
