Tonight, Los 3 1/2 Brothers continue their Friday night residency at El Jacalito. If you’re looking for conjunto on a Friday night, you’ll find it with this little Austin-based ensemble at the family-owned Mexican restaurant on the south side.
Los 3 1/2 Brothers includes veterans John Aguilar (bajo sexto & lead vocals), Domingo “Mingo” Zapata (bass & background vocals), and Joe Zapata (drums), along with rising star Julian “JJ” Olivarez (accordion & background Vocals). Music lovers can expect some classic accordion-driven Conjunto standards from this talented group, along with some selections that allow Olivarez to spread his wings on the squeezebox.
Long story short: Between the food, music and intimate atmosphere, this Friday residency is kind of a perfect example of authentic South Texas culture, much like Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia’s Wednesday night residency at Little Mexico. No light show or nightclub fanciness – just food and music. Family-friendly, with a little dance floor too. Bonus: the guys also play every other Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
El Jacalito is located at 2030 E. Oltorf, suite 110, just east of I-35 in south Austin. Music is from 7 to 9 p.m., all ages are welcome, and there is no cover charge. For more information, call 512-445-4109.
