While Austinites are getting ready for the big Pachanga Latino Music Fest (Pachanga) this weekend, a few unofficial pre-parties are poppin’ up including a great two band bill at Gypsy Lounge on Friday, May 9. The bill includes Austin-based psychedelic chicha band Money Chicha and South American-fusion band, La Frenetika. Although not an official Pachanga pre-party, the Facebook event page does mention Pachanga ticket giveaways will happen throughout the night.
Headliners Money Chicha are one of the many bands in the Grupo Fantasma family of bands that includes Brownout, Spanish Gold, Ocote Soul Sounds and The Echocentrics. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia with elements of psych-rock.
Openers La Frenetika are big in membership and big in sound. The Latin-fusion collective performs a medley of various original songs and covers of popular vallenato, gozadera, Colombian cumbia and guapacha classics from South America.
Gypsy Lounge is located at 1504 E. 6th Street next to Hotel Vegas and Volstead. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
