On Saturday Apr. 26, the Bob Bullock Museum hosts 8th Annual Big Squeeze Accordion Contest Statewide Finals and Concert, presented by Texas Folklife. The event will feature performances by some of the state’s most talented young accordion players, as well as performances by other groups, and last year’s winner.
Kicking things off will be Austin’s own Fabulous Polkasonics, which features Clemencia Zapata and Bradley Jaye Williams from Conjunto Los Pinkys and Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia. Polka is playing a bigger part of the Big Squeeze this year, as there will be a winner from each category: polka, zydeco, and conjunto.
The finalists in each category will then get a chance to show their stuff before 2013 champion Michael Ramos takes the stage. The winner from each group will go on to perform at the 25th annual Accordion Kings & Queens in Houston on June 7.
Long story short: A fun afternoon with a sampling of different accordion styles, a glimpse of the future, and performances by the pros.
The Bob Bullock Museum is located at 1800 Congress, at the corner of MLK and Congress in downtown Austin. Music starts at 2 p.m. Admission is free. All ages are welcome. View the Facebook event here.
