In Peru, in the late 60’s and 1970’s, from the slums of Lima to the jungle towns of the Amazon, a new sound emerged which would come to be known as Chicha. Influenced by Colombian Cumbia, this new tropical sound used a classic Afro-Caribbean rhythm section of bass, bells, bongos, congas and timbales along with modern electric instruments – electric guitars, Farfisas and an occasional Moog synth.
Fast-forward some forty years, and here comes the first “Chicha Summit.” Three North-American bands that have embraced a sound long-forgotten will play their own take on Chicha: Money Chicha, from Austin, Chicha Dust from Tucson and Chicha Libre, from Brooklyn.
The “Chicha Summit” here in Austin will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Flamingo Cantina. The best part? We have a pair of tickets to give away to one of our lucky Austin Vida readers.
The giveaway will be conducted as a raffle from our email list. Just click “enter the drawing” below and submit your full name and email address. We will pick the first winner from these submissions before 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, the day before the show. Only submissions with both first and last names will be officially entered in the drawing. The winner will be notified via email from Austin Vida. Good luck!
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. Tickets are available for purchase at the door for $10.
