On Saturday, June 1, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes Grupo Rodeo to the stage. The veteran San Antonio group returns to Austin with the classic sound of ’90s Tejano, which is sure to the delight the growing number of regulars at the southeast Austin hot spot.
Since forming nearly twenty years ago, Rodeo has recorded eight albums, with a couple breaks here and there with a few changes in personnel. Led by Frank Villarreal, Jr. (saxophone, keyboards and vocals), Rodeo still has the vibe of when Tejano was hot and artists like David Lee Garza, Ram Herrera, and Jay Perez all had tour buses and were selling out large venues all over Texas. Adding to this sound is Joey Martinez, who is one of the many former lead vocalists for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, and brings a strong, smooth voice that compliments Villarreal very well. The group’s latest album, Entre Mis Manos, was released in 2012.
Long story short: Quintessential Tejano, complete with keyboards, saxophone, and accordion. Don’t forget the cowboy hat and boots!
