Friday, Nov. 8, 6th Street live music venue Flamingo Cantina plays host to a great local showcase that pairs two of Austin’s local Latino bands of different flavors with an old school soul up-and-comer. This kind of mixed-genre billing of Latin and soul is rare (unfortunately) and does not occur often, so take advantage on Friday night. Here’s a quick look at the performers.
Austin-based rockeros Kalua are veterans in the local Rock en Español scene. Inspired by their American, Mexican, Colombian and Venezuelan backgrounds, Kalua fuses elements of ’80s and early ’90s Rock en Español (Maná, Caifanes, etc) with the vocal stylings of experienced mariachi singer for a frontman. Kalua perform at 10 p.m.
Manzanas Malas follow with a bilingual pop fusion of sounds. Lead singer and frontwoman Victoria Acosta of American Idol fame (season 12), also an experienced mariachi singer, is backed by a talented group of musicians that includes DJ Villa. Their music fuses elements of American pop with traditional Latin rhythms such as cumbia, salsa and Tejano. Manzanas Malas perform at 11 p.m.
Closing the night is Austin’s newest up-and-coming soul star Latasha Lee. Fresh off of a busy fall that included an ACL Fest performance and a Red Bull Sound Select showcase with Brownout, Lee is quickly getting noticed in and out of town. The Amy Winehouse vocal comparisons hold weight but her sound is more full thanks to her backing band, The BlackTies. Hear Lee sing at midnight.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. $5 cover. 21+ welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.
