Founded by four high school friends, the Peruvian band Novalima takes Afro-Peruvian music and injects it with a little bit of electronic and some dub to create a sound that bridges the traditional and the modern yet retains a careful balance between the different eras. Their reinvention of traditional music hasn’t gone unnoticed; the band has topped the music charts in Canada and Europe as well as earned a Latin Grammy nomination for best alternative album for their sophomore album, Coba Coba.
Building off their success, Novalima gets ready to debut their third full-length album, Karimba, out Jan. 31 through ESL Music. The 12-track album is mellow enough to enjoy during the day, yet it becomes irresistible to just stand still and listen to it on a night out without dancing along to it.
