With so many Diez y Seis related happenings this weekend in Austin, Latin music lovers will want to look to Flamingo Cantina for one of the best electro-cumbia showcases west of I-35. On Saturday, September 15, the Flamingo Cantina gets “cumbia-crunk” with three of the genre’s best.
Opening the showcase will be Peligrosa DJ and Master Blaster Sound System member DJ Dus. The Corpus Christi-based producer is considered by some to be the inventor of Cumbia Electronic. He’ll get the party going early before joining Master Blaster Sound System later in the evening. DJ Dus takes the stage at 10 p.m.
Following DJ Dus are Austin-based Los Bandidos Cosmicos. Led by the prolific DJ Manny and Claude McCann (Charanga Cakewalk, Afrofreque), it is only natural that their sound is a fusion of electronica, Latin rhythms and hip hop. Los Bandidos Cosmicos perform at 11 p.m.
Headlining the night are Cosmica artist Master Blaster Sound System. The group is composed of members who are members of other bands, including frontman Brian Ramos of Charanga Cakewalk. The group’s sound, however, is far from the “side project” label some may give it. Their sound is a electronic-based with elements of cumbia, hip hop and traditional Mexican rhythms. It’s all danceable however you describe it. Master Blaster Sound System perform at midnight.
