[6/8] Preview: Suns of Orpheus, Bamako Airlines & Huerta Culture at Flamingo Cantina

Latin and world music fans will want to be at Flamingo Cantina this Friday night, June 8. In addition to being an eclectic, quality local music showcase, the event will also serve as a fundraiser. Three Austin-based bands will perform and donate a portion of the proceeds to Partners in Health-Haiti, helping the organization continue their amazing effort of providing health care to the folks who need it most in Haiti. According to the event’s organizers, the theme of the night is “Ubuntu,” the philosophy of harmony and the spirit of sharing among the members of a society.

Austin-based Huerta Culture opens the showcase. The group  mixes various sounds of Latino rhythms from Cuban son, salsa, Colombian cumbia and reggae fusion. The group refers to their sound as “psichocumbia reggaeska.” We think that pretty much sums it up. Huerta Culture perform at 10 p.m.

The funky Suns of Orpheus (S.O.O.) follow Huerta Culture. Formed in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2011, S.O.O. is lead by the dynamic Frederico Geib, frontman of local Brazilian funk band Os Alquimistas and the more soulful F7 & The Hashashin. The S.O.O. is Geib’s self-labeled “psychedelic world music” band. S.O.O. perform at 11:15 p.m.

Headlining the night’s event is the eight-piece Afropop orchestra, Bamako Airlines. The group draws influences from their culturally diverse members to create a dynamic, contemporary perspective of African styles of music. Bamako Airlines perform at midnight.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. 21+ are welcome. Doors open at 9:00pm. $10 cover. Visit the event page on Do512 here and on Facebook here.
