For those of you in Austin looking for a good cultural live music experience tonight, you will want to head over to Flamingo Cantina. Known for providing music lovers with everything from reggae to Latin music, the 6th Street venue is known for hosting great live music different from the norm. Tonight appears to have a Latin flavored “World Music Night” vibe.
Austin-based singer-songwriter Gina Chavez opens the night’s showcase. Chavez is coming off a great year in 2011 after having been featured on the city’s Austin Music Compilation, Austin Music Volume 10. She’s headlined for Austin Vida at Cactus Cafe and performed at Pachanga Fest. Her music is a fusion of folk, indie and traditional Latin rhythms. Chavez performs at 9:30pm.
Following Chavez will be the Brazilian influenced The Batikum. Lead by Brazilian born drummer/percussionist Luiz Coutinho, The Batikum’s music is influenced by music from Africa, Brazil and traditional Latin American sounds. The Batikum perform at 11:00pm.
Huerta Culture headlines the night’s showcase. The Austin-based group mixes various sounds of Latino rhythms from Cuban son, salsa, Colombian cumbia and reggae fusion. The group refers to their sound as “psichocumbia reggaeska.” We think that pretty much sums it up. Huerta Culture perform at 12:30am.
