Tonight Peligrosa will be celebrating their five year anniversary at recently opened Holy Mountain, formerly Beauty Bar. For five years the Austin-based Latin DJ collective have helped define the Latin music scene here in the Live Music Capital. They are emblematic of the new wave of Latinos in the U.S. and especially here in Austin, bridging the gap between the classic Spanish language music of the old country with modern electronic-based genres we Americanized Latinos party to on any given weekend. In an ever changing Austin, one that always presents different challenges for Latino musicians and entertainers, Peligrosa not only sustained but grew into a movement bigger than they could have ever imagined.
What started here in founder DJ Orión’s home and in the small dive bar clubs of Red River five years ago is now an internationally recognized brand. For the past five years, Peligrosa was Orión, Manolo Black, DJ Dus (Corpus Christi), Pagame, Sonora (San Antonio) and King Louie. Austin-based DJ Hobo D was a longtime member but is now with Applied Pressure. Photographer Marcos Molina, aka Quito, and visuals guru VJ 4th wall are also part of the collective.
During tonight’s anniversary celebration at Holy Mountain, the collective will be inducting two new members, Austin-based DJ Chorizo Funk and rapper Chingo Bling. Chorizo Funk, purveyor of Afro-Latin music, is the Austin Lords of Wax champion and one of the founders of popular dance party Body Rock. Chingo Bling, aka El Ghetto Vaquero, was born Pedro Herrera III in Houston and is arguably the Latino king of Texas-based underground hip hop.
Tonight’s celebration will be the last of the Peligrosa monthly parties. The crew will be grindin’ it out in the studio in the early part of 2013. Those in Austin can still catch the respective DJs at their own individual gigs around town. DJ Dus will be holding it down in Corpus and also performing with Latin fusion group Master Blaster Sound System.
