In just five years, Calle 13 has transformed from being Latin hip-hop underdogs to standing on top of the Urban Latino music world. Along with that they have carried a responsibility of speaking for Latin people (for better or worse) in their latest album Entre Los Que Quieran. Their newest single off the album, “Baile De Los Pobres,” is another example of the musical eclecticism that combines a Latin blend of Bollywood and pulsating tropical drums. “Residente” Rene Perez spits about the socioeconomic differences between him and his lover.
The video for “Baile De Los Pobres” was directed by none other other than actor and Mexican heartthrob Diego Luna, who is great admirer of Calle 13’s music. The video portrays the classic love tale between rich girl and poor guy. The first few couple of seconds are little revealing to say the least. A young man(not Perez) is caught cozying up with his woman and then chased down the neighborhood todo desnudo by the rich folks before returning with a group of Indian dancers and bunch of misfits. A grand party then ensues.
