Having grown up with salsa and Latin rhythms all around him, it was only natural to see Latin soul singer Rene Lopez follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead of taking up the trumpet like his dad, Lopez opted for the drums and soon traded this instrument for the microphone. During his college years, he was the lead vocalist for the New York rock band, The Authority, during the early ‘90s.
Starting in July, Lopez’s new album ELS will be available via National Geographic World Music. The album celebrates his Nuyorican heritage as he blends boogaloo with hip-hop and rock to exemplify the creation of his unique style called “Electric Latin Soul.” Lopez co-produced his album with Mario Caldato, known for his work with the Beastie Boys, and Jason Lader, who worked with Julian Casablancas.
