Twenty years ago, an unlikely trio of two Puerto Rican’s and a punk rock drummer came together to form a percussion ensemble that eventually became a 10-member salsa band: Bio Ritmo. What started in Richmond is far from the typical salsa music heard. The member’s different backgrounds all add to the unconventional indie style salsa they play.
Bio Ritmo’s latest album, La Verdad, released by Electric Cowbell Records, will be available on Sept. 20. The album, distributed by Fat Beats, can be obtained digitally, on CD or a 12” vinyl record, making Bio Ritmo the only salsa band to still release on vinyl. In just a couple of weeks, the band will kick off their tour in France at the Toros y Salsa Festival. Afterward, they will head to North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and will finish up in New York in November.
