As the talent search for another season of “American Idol” began in 2005, Brandon Garcia waited countless hours just to come before a judge. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get past the first round of elimination. Despite this setback, he set foot in the Alamadome a year later only to hear the same news again after a 30 second audition. Six years later, Garcia writes and produces music that ranges from country to pop and even to gonzo rock. During this year’s BorderFest, Garcia was able to represent his hometown of McAllen, Texas. Aside from music, he also initiated Leyenda Production Co., a performing arts troupe that has produced three musicals.
After living for many years within less than two hours of the border, Garcia has seen the violence caused by the drug war. The worsening conditions along the border has inspired him to write “Barbarians,” a song that blames drug consumers’ demand for the thousands of dead bodies found every week.
