South by Southwest is without a doubt one of the craziest weeks on the planet. Even better for Latin Alternative and Latin indie fans, it is one of those rare occasions where you can see some of the best musical talent from all over Latin America and Spain in one music festival. This year was no different.
Spain and Latin America were well represented. Spain unveiled their best talent during the “Sounds of Spain” showcase at Red Eyed Fly. Despite being a smaller showcase, media legend and Rollingstone Magazine senior writer, David Fricke, was in attendance to see one of his favorite garage rock bands, Capsula. Many folks were also there to see Nacional Records artist and indie-pop band Polock. Both stood out and would probably be way more popular if they were from Brooklyn or The U.K.
Unofficial showcases were also good to Latino artists including the big day party at Aussie’s Bar & Grill. Hosting an array of Latin Alternative and indie bands, Mexico’s Rey Pila and Chikita Violenta were the standout’s. Pila, frontman of popular indie rock band Los Dynamite, showcased his solo music while Chikita Violenta performed tracks from their latest English language album Tre3s.
Finally, it was Jalisco, Mexico’s Le Bucherettes that impressed us the most as a staff this year. Signed to Omar Rodríguez-López’s label, Le Bucherettes played multiple shows to promote themselves and their new album due out on May 10. Fronted by the lovely and talented Teri Gender Bender (pictured above), the trio rocked stages all over town from Peckerhead’s to the Sargent House showcase at Emo’s Annex. Teri is the next coming of Courtney Love circa the Live Through This era in the early ’90s. Teri has Love’s moves, presence, and rock-and-roll swagger, all while making sure to let everyone know she’s Latina with her Spanish banter between songs. You can expect to hear more from Le Bucherettes this year.
Those in Austin with tickets can see them perform with Dilinger Escape Plan and Deftones at Austin Music Hall on June 4. Enjoy ticket holders, as they will not be opening acts very long. Discoveries such as Le Bucherettes are what make South by Southwest worth all the craziness and sleepless nights.
