For the first time ever, Austin Vida will be presenting a showcase at the historic Cactus Cafe. Given the fact that Cactus Cafe is an intimate listening room and it happens to be Mexican Independence Day, we put together something traditional and fit for the venue. Austin singer-songwriter Gina Chavez will be our showcase artist. Chavez and her band will give our audience a special set that includes different instrumentation, new originals and more. Read more about Chavez here.
Opening our showcase will be Austin based Son Jarocho group, Son Armado. Son Jarocho originates from Veracruz, a southern state in Mexico. Son Jarocho is a popular education-based art form centered around community gatherings & celebrations known as Fandangos. The Fandango involves music, dancing, & poetry in the context of a communally created and shared space, with the tarima (a wooden dance platform) as the gathering point. The Austin Son Jarocho quartet perform at 8:30pm.
Doors open at 8:00pm, show begins at 8:30pm. Admission is $8 presale and $10 at the door. All ages are welcome. The Cactus Cafe is on Guadalupe Street across from the University Co-op and is located in the southwest corner of the Texas Union building. The Texas Union, at the corner of 24th and Guadalupe, is on the University of Texas campus. Entrance to the Cactus is through the main West Mall Lobby.
