Somos Tejanos (.org) is a Texas based non-profit whose website is dedicated to cultivating Latino/a civic participation throughout Texas by focusing on Tejano lifestyle and culture. The website pushes and relies on an online community platform that not only facilitates cooperation, but allows for the free exchange of ideas and discussions of various topics such as politics and music. Speaking of music, Somos Tejanos are presenting their “Noche Latino” showcase on Saturday, August 20, at Flamingo Cantina with some of our staff favorites.
The Austin based Latin fusion collective Huerta Culture open the show. Huerta Culture’s music fuses elements of traditional Latin rhythms like cumbia, Cuban Son, reggae, ska and salsa. The band themselves call their style of music “Psichocumbia reggaeska.” We’ll go with that too. Huerta Culture perform at 10:00pm.
Following Huerta Culture will be Austin’s El Tule. When El Tule take the stage, you may see gringo faces but you will hear Latin music that is as good as any Latino band in town. Their songs’ subjects include art, Latin American culture and history. The best part? You can dance to it. El Tule perform at 11:00pm.
Closing the night’s showcase will be our favorite “Barrio Big Band” from San Antonio, Bombasta. Their brand of cumbias mixed with reggae, salsa and hip hop is the perfect way to close out the night. Be ready to dance your ass off and stay late as Bombasta perform at 12:00am.
Listen and download to “De La Calle” from Bombasta below.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. 21+ are welcome. Doors open at 9:00pm. $5 cover. Visit the event page on Do512 here and on Facebook here.
