The Austin Latino Music Association (ALMA) has produced a variety of music programs over the years, all in hope of increasing awareness of and supporting Austin’s Latino Music scene. One of ALMA’s more recent additions to their showcase series is the Women In Latin Music showcase. This year’s showcase will take place on Friday, August 12, at Jovita’s.
Performing at this year’s showcase will be a handful of Austin favorites, including early performer Gina Chavez. The Austin singer-songwriter is having a great year so far including landing one of her songs on the city’s Austin Music Vol. 10 compilation and scoring an NPR feature. Chavez performs at 6:00pm. If you can’t make it out early to catch Chavez at Jovita’s, she will be performing later that night at Momo’s with her full band.
Also performing will be Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia. The newly formed group includes two of Austin’s most talented musicians: accordionist Susan Torres and the dynamic vocalist/percussionist Clemencia Zapata. Their music combines elements of traditional conjunto sounds of Tex-Mex polkas, rancheras, huapangos, cumbias, boleros, jazz and blues. Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia perform at 7:00pm.
Other performers Friday night at Jovita’s include Joanna Ramirez with Larry Lange & his Lonely Knights, Mary Welch y Los Curanderos, Sweetmeat Acoustic Set and special guests to be announced. Jovita’s is located at 1619 South 1st Street. All ages are welcome. Cover is $10. Doors open at 5:00pm. Visit the event post on Do512 here for set times.
