(11/27) Preview: Tex-Mex Tardeadas at Plaza Saltillo with Johnny Degollado

November 27, 2011 By Austin Vida Staff

Pachanga is a Latin-themed music, cultural arts and food festival dedicated to showcasing the vibrant blend of Latino-created music and art and the impact it has on American culture today. The signature Pachanga Music Festival in May has featured big names in Latin Alternative like Mexican Institute of Sound, Nortec Collective and Ozomatli. Details for the 5th Annual Pachanga Latino Muisc Festival will be announced early next year.

While we wait for the next festival, Pachanga  is collaborating with the City of Austin to present Tex-Mex Tardeadas, a series of conjunto music concerts for the community at the Plaza Saltillo in East Austin. This special series highlights a genre of music native to the South Texas region and rich with the lively sounds of the accordion and the traditional 12-string bajo sexto.

First built in 1998 as a gift to Austin by the sister city of Saltillo, Mexico, the Tex-Mex Tardeadas are a genuine and community-friendly way to celebrate the newly renovated Plaza Saltillo. The two-hour, fun-filled family event is Free to all and features live music from homegrown conjunto bands, dance contests, prizes, food and more. The next Tex-Mex Tardeada will take place on today, November 27, with a performance by Johnny Degollado y Su Conjunto.

Watch “The Montopolis Kid” perform in the 91.7FM KOOP studio below.

Plaza Saltillo is located at  412 Comal Street. The event takes place from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. All ages are welcome. Visit the official event page on Do512 here.
