The Austin based Cine Las Americas is a non-profit organization whose goal is to promote cross-cultural understanding and growth by educating, entertaining and challenging diverse audiences through film and media arts. Aside from their yearly film festival, the organization promotes Latin and indigenous films through out the year and partners with local schools to create media art educational programs to serve the minority youth in Austin.
Cine Las Americas will present a free screening of ¿Qué he Hecho yo para Merecer Esto? (What Have I Done to Deserve This?). The 1984 comedy/drama, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, tells the story of a family with all sorts of problems. Gloria is a maid who’s addicted to amphetamines while her husband is a taxi driver and a forger who reminiscence on his past romance with a German singer. Of their two children, one sells and consumes heroin while the other likes men. They all live under one roof in a small apartment in Madrid with the grandma and a lizard named Money who is the only witness to the night when Gloria kills her husband with a ham leg.
The free outdoor screening of ¿Qué he Hecho yo para Merecer Esto? will start at 8:00 p.m. Oct. 23 at Takoba located at 1411 E Seventh St. Early arrival is advised.
