Review: ‘Del Castillo’ album by Del Castillo

April 9, 2009 By Ian Morales

Other than Grupo Fantasma, no one gets Austin crowds dancing better than Del Castillo. On the group’s latest self titled release, Del Castillo, nothing has changed. They are as consistent and rhythmic as they have always been. The beautiful Spanish guitar and stellar vocals of Mark Del Castillo are still there. Only this time around, their infectious and seductive Flamenco rock stylings seep even deeper into the soul.

The self titled album is a great mix bilingual mix of songs in both English and Spanish, but honestly what language the songs are in matters not.The album’s best song is “Anybody Wanna” which is a beautiful cumbia sung in English. “Café Sin Leche” marries Spanish Flamenco and Salsa music as well as anyone ever has if not better. For the more Mexican traditionalist, there’s “Corazon Loco” that will have you waltzing, drinking, or both while throwing gritos from the top of your lungs. Guilty as charged.

Del Castillo does what Latin music is supposed to do…break down language barriers and get people moving. Their sound is musically precise and their lyrics are quite romantic (for the most part anyway). The new Del Castillo self titled album is a must have for any music lover.
