Review: ‘Barracuda’ album by Kinky

June 3, 2009 By Ian Morales

BarracudaMonterrey, Nuevo Leon, is arguably the coolest city in Mexico. So much musical talent comes from Monterrey including one of my favorite groups, Kinky. Having recently released their fifth album, Barracuda, the group continues to live up to the high standard their previous releases set for them. Without a doubt,

Barracuda is their best album to date. Without deviating from their signature Latin indie-electro style, Kinky still managed to make Barracuda their most diverse and danceable album. Sure there were a couple of songs that should not have made it to the final cut, but overall it is as close to being a Latin Alternative classic as a group can get.

Barracuda immediately grabs you with the electro funk track, “Hasta Quemarnos”. With space like keyboard effects and percussions, it is hard to stay still. On the tail end of “Masacre Sonica”, you will find the two minute song “The Day I Lost The Beat”. It is a quick instrumental gem that sounds just like an old eight bit Atari video game with a hint of electric guitar. Again, it is difficult to sit still when listening. As much fun as those tracks are, Barracuda only gets better.

“Marcha Atras” and the English language track, “Those Girls”, are the best tracks on Barracuda and are now two of my new favorite songs. “Marcha Atras” is a keyboard heavy, bouncy, indie electro dance track. “Those Girls” provides us all with “more cowbell” to dance to along with a catchy chorus to sing along with. It is the most universally appealing track as it is done completely in English and sounds the most mainstream radio ready.
