The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and Red Salmon Arts host another round of reading and writing workshops at the Flor de Nopal Literary Festival on November 17.
The first writing workshop “Body Bliss” led by Celeste Guzman Mendoza, will focus on the human body form. During the workshop, attendees will read and discuss the works of Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou, Gloria Anzaldua, Pablo Neruda and others that celebrate and praise the female and male human form. In response to the works, poem and dramatic monologue writing will follow as well as basic yoga and body movement. The workshop will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) located at 600 River St.
The second writing workshop, “Poetry as Pilgrimage,” presented by John D. Fry, will use poetry as a means of expressing the mysteries that people don’t understand. , Fry will use mystery through discussions, selected readings and writing exercises as a way to open up attendees’ imagination. The workshop will be held from 3-6 p.m. at the MACC.
As part of the festival, a reading session following the workshop will be hosted by writer Ire’ne Lara Silva at 7 p.m. at Resistencia Bookstore located at 1801-A South 1st St.
