The Alianza Cultural Latinoamericana (ACL) is a community of artists and art lovers who promote Latin American cultural expressions in Austin. The organization seeks to promote Latin American art forms to the Hispanic community in Austin and to spread this knowledge with new generations through initiatives like Café Con Letras, their monthly showcase that brings different art forms to the Latino community to maintain cultural ties alive, vibrant and constantly evolving.
Though this month’s Café con Letras counts with a change of scene, the focus on cultural arts remains the same. The event will honor the late folk singer Violeta Parra, known for transforming the traditional folk music scene in Chile. The first part of the event carries on her legacy as ACL friends interpret her songs. For the last part of the program, Andrés Wood’s autobiographical film, Violeta Se Fue A Los Cielos, based on Ángel Parra’s book, will be screened.
The event will be held from 7-10 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Janitzio Mexican Restaurant located at 600 W. Martin Luther King Blvd. All ages are welcome. Admission is free.
