On Thursday, November 1, thrift store shoppers and fans of fandango estilo Son Jarocho will want to stop by Treasure City Thrift to shop during Noche de Compras. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., all sales from this event will go towards supporting and promoting free music workshops, as well as cultural and youth programs in the area and abroad.
Currently Austin-based group Son Armado joined with other Texas jaraneros (Fandango Tejas) are focusing fundraising efforts on hosting Son Altepee’s first ever U.S. tour. Son Altepee are scheduled to perform in Austin at The Sahara Lounge on November 11. Traveling from Acayucan, Mexico, in the state of Veracruz, Son Altepee are young ambassadors of the musical style “Música Tradicional de Cuerdas” and active organizers who believe string music is a tool of social consciousness in a shared environment.
Live music for the event will come from Son Armado, along with other Austin-based jaraneros during the usual First Thursday Son Armado Son Jarocho Fandango class. The fandango style jam is open to all who would like to participate. Basic instruction will be provided to assist anyone who would like to play an instrument.
