Preview: Latinitas celebrates ‘Fotos de mi Alma’ fundraiser

June 9, 2011 By Austin Vida Staff

Latinitas will be hosting their annual, ‘Fotos de mi Alma,’ photography fundraiser today auctioning works from various countries.

Five years ago, the organization relied on photographs donated by anyone to auction off, but as the fundraiser has developed, it has attracted a variety of talent and will celebrate the event with “The Shield’s” actor Benito Martinez. This year, work from the United Nations Children’s Fund photographer of the year, Ed Kashi, will be featured alongside other international documentarians and photographers from Mexico City and Tehran, Iran.

The fundraiser will help Latinitas continue to serve more than 5,000 girls in Central and West Texas. What started as an organization at the University of Texas at Austin in 2002, has transformed into a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower young Latinas through programs in media and technology. It has also created the first online magazine for young Latinas.

The event will be held at the Emma Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center located at 600 River St. today from 6-9 p.m. Tickets cost $15/20 at the door. Food and drinks will be provided and are sponsored by Takoba restaurant and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.
