Preview: Carnaval Brasileiro Austin

February 2, 2011 By Austin Vida Staff

Carnaval Brasileiro Austin celebrates it’s 34th year this Saturday, Feb. 5, at The Palmer Events Center.

A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Carnaval will benefit Austin Sunshine Camps, a non-profit dedicated to providing free summer camps and year round mentoring for at risk youth.

The party starts at 9 p.m. and you can expect an evening of music from New York’s Beleza Brasil. Regularly voted best Brazilian band by the Brazilian Press Association, they’ll make their eighth appearance this year and will play a dance-inducing set of traditional samba, frevo, marchinha, bloco-afro music.

Austin’s own traditional Rio-style Samba School, the Acadêmicos da Opera, a locally-based group of 35 drummers and 25 dancers, all decked out in elaborate unifying costumes, will be making their seventh Carnaval presentation.

Regularly attended by over 6, 000 people annually, the bands and attendees come decked out in exotic costumes. The music, dancing and whole vibe of the party make this yearly event a nearly euphoric experience.

So get out of the cold and get a little taste of Rio.
