Calling all fast-pitching, goal-kicking, nothin’-but-net-shooting, toe-touching, run-like-the-wind Latina teens: Latinitas Magazine wants to give you the chance to win the 2010 Latinitas Sports All-Star Award. But ladies, this isn’t just any old high school sports banquet for athletic recognition; this is for Latinas who are all-stars in the true sense of the word, not just in athletics but in academic performance, community involvement and leadership ability.
A sobering 2002 survey of the U.S. Department of Education showed that only 36 percent of Hispanic females participated in interscholastic sports, compared with 52 percent of non-Hispanics. Specifically looking at Latina teens, their low participation is attributed to transportation issues, economic status and traditional household responsibilities that can fall upon the shoulders of young Latinas, such as working to supplement household income or helping take care of younger siblings. Not discounting the importance of those responsibilities, there are measurable benefits to participating in extracurricular activities, especially athletics, including the prevention of obesity, dropout and even teen pregnancy. This award serves to shed the spotlight on deserving Latina teen who exemplifies rising above the data and demonstrating to all Latina teens the invaluable benefits of being dedicated, disciplined and determined in athletics and all areas of life.
Sponsored by Latinitas Magazine, this contest is a fitting step for the very first digital magazine created by and for young Latina women, with a special emphasis on empowering Latina teens and girls to become utilize and become proficient in media and technology. In short, a worthwhile endeavor from an uplifting group of people with a positive purpose! Also, in addition to having the honor of serving as a role model to Latina teens everywhere, winners will be awarded exciting prizes including a Dell DJ music player and being featured in a front page article in the teen Latinitas publication: TeenLatinitas.com.
