Austin Vida’s Halloween Guide 2009

October 31, 2009 By Ian Morales

austin night skylineFor those of you coming into town or who are already in town and need to know where to go, Austin Vida is here for you. With so much to do and so many options everywhere you look downtown, it can be overwhelming. With the cold weather and your slutty costumes, you can only be outside for so long before you need to warm up.

First we’ll start up north in Pflugerville, in the event you want to avoid all the commotion downtown. Austin’s own modern rock All Stars, Vallejo, play at The Krush Lounge & Grill. Named after the brothers who formed the band, Omar, Alex and A.J. Vallejo, they’ve been an Austin staple since the ‘90s. With Latin percussion, modern rock riffs, and great vocals, Vallejo is always a good live show. Be sure to pick up a copy of their latest album, Thicker Than Water at the show.

Opening for Vallejo is “the Unnamed Band” at 7:00PM. The cost is $10 general admission, $15 for V.I.P. tickets. Only 21 and up will be admitted. For those who show up in costume, there are cash and other prizes for the most unique costumes. Krush Lounge is located at 14106 North IH-35, Suite A.

For those who prefer celebrate Halloween with some rip your face off metal, head over to South Congress and catch Pack of Wolves at Trophy’s. Featured this parch March in Austin Vida, the guys from Pack of Wolves have already won over many in the metal world with their latest release entitled Betrayer. I challenge anyone who loves metal to listen to that record and tell me they don’t love it.

Playing with Pack of Wolves that night will be Curse The Heavens, Newlywed and baron God. The cost is $5 at the door and of course you are encouraged to come in costume. Everything starts at 9:00PM down there on 2008 S. Congress Ave. For more on Pack of Wolves, read our interview here or check out this Austin Vida Live video.

For those of you who will be downtown on Halloween, The Beauty Bar is the place to be. Lucy Poodle the Poodle presents “Noche De Los Muertos”. Austin’s Indie En Espanol extraordinaires, Maneja Beto, headline a night of Halloween hipster goodness. A staff favorite here on Austin Vida, Maneja Beto was a recent video interview feature. The guys talked about what’s behind the name, their musical style and tastes, as well as funny stories from touring. After a year long hiatus last year, Maneja Beto returned to the scene at Pachanga Fest in May. To the surprise of many, you can still see Maneja Beto for $10 or less, despite being of a high quality that is worth paying way more to see. They are easily the best unsigned Latin Alternative act in the world, and they are right here in Austin.

Tonight at Beauty Bar with Maneja Beto will be The Hi Tones and Planet Rye Co. Skelton, angel and devil costumes are encouraged. Doors are at 9:00PM, show starts at 10:00. There will also be other stuff like Day of The Dead face painting, Lucy Treats and giveaways. If you come dressed as Frida Kahlo or a mariachi, you get in free. The Beauty bar is located 617 E. 7th. Here’s a preview of what you can expect to hear tonight from Maneja Beto:

So there you have it friends. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or live here and just don’t know what to do, we’re here to welcome you. Be safe and arrive early to wherever you’re going as parking is even more sparse than it usually is. See you all out tonight!
