On Friday, November 2, the fourth and final installment was part of the Fun Fun Fun Fest ‘Nites aftershow series.  The tour was dedicated to showcasing the cross-influence of Mexican and American cultures in contemporary music and art.

Each event featured one Mexican headliner and local bands or DJs. Headlining Friday’s event was Monterrey, Mexico producer and mix-master Toy Selectah (Toy Hernández). Austin Vida photographer Kristie Bocanegra was at Red 7 and shot some photos of the night’s festivities.

Photos: Nacional Records showcase at SXSW 2012

March 23, 2012 By Kristie Bocanegra

La Vida Boheme / photo by Kristie Bocanegra

The world’s premier Latin alternative music label knows how to throw a party. Nacional Record‘s Friday night South by Southwest showcase at Maggie Mae’s was one of the most memorable shows we’ve been to, and it happened on a packed Sixth Street on one of the craziest nights of the year. The atmosphere was festive, energetic and intimate. Musicians talked and took pictures with their fans. Nacional artists who weren’t performing that night were in attendance, like Bomba Estereo’s Liliana Saumet. Some fans wore pointy boots and lucha masks.

Loquat got the night started with a relatively relaxed set to ease us into the party. Ritmo Machine wowed the crowd with their high-energy performance. Percussionist Eric Bobo went off on a couple of solos that really had the crowd moving and their special guest, legendary emcee Sick Jacken, got the crowd pumped with his Spanish flows. La Vida Bohème was all energy, energy, energy. They had adoring fans bringing them beer in between songs. By the time 3BallMty took the stage, it was a big dance party. Everyone was drinking tequilla, dancing and wearing Nacional t-shirts.

Photo Recap: Western Ghost House, Ledaswan & Politics at Frank

December 12, 2011 By Kristie Bocanegra

Politics performing live at Frank.

Austin Vida’s last showcase of 2011 happened Friday, December 9,  at Frank. We ended the year with one of our regular indie showcases where we feature or present indie rock bands who have Latino members. It matters not whether the lyrics are English or Spanish, we just care about the talent. It is all part of Austin Vida’s mission to change the way people see Latino musicians and breakdown stereotypes. After all, while all U.S. born Latinos may love traditional Spanish language music of their heritage, we also love all types of music from Europe and The U.S.

Friday night Austin Vida featured two of Austin’s best and a San Antonio favorite. Ethereal-indie band Western Ghost House opened the show while San Antonio’s Ledaswan followed. Austin Vida feature artist and Ultra 8201 Label* band Politics headlined.  A good time was had by all. Austin Vida photographer Kristie Bocanegra was in attendance and captured the photos below. Be sure to check out our event schedule for our upcoming showcases on Facebook here.

Photos: Peligrosa at The Scoot Inn

November 21, 2011 By Kristie Bocanegra

Peligrosa spin at The Scoot Inn on November 18.

Peligrosa is the longest running Latin Dance party in Austin, Texas. The collective consists of DJs, producers, VJs and photographers. They spin everything from Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Porros, Gaitas, Reggaeton, Son, Bachata, Tropical Bass, Kuduro, Eletcro, Funk, Moombahton and more.

Every third Friday of the month, Peligrosa throws a big party at The Scoot Inn in East Austin. On Friday, November 18, it was all Peligrosa as the group was without their usual special guest DJ. No one seemed to notice or care as the Latin Bass DJ collective had attendees dancing the night away. Austin Vida photographer Kristie Bocanegra was on hand to capture photos from the party.

Photo Recap: Night Fever XVII at Volstead Lounge

October 18, 2011 By Kristie Bocanegra

J-Boogie with Austin's DJ Manny

Austin based promoters Soul of the Boot Entertainment (SOBE) and Strange Tribe Productions really hustle when it comes to throwing their regular Night Fever concert and DJ showcase series. The DJ talent that the series brings is always impeccable and often include many of our favorite popular Latino DJs such as DJ Manny and DJ Orion of Peligrosa.

On Saturday, October 15, SOBE and Strange Tribe presented Night Fever XVII at Volstead Lounge.  Their headliner was San Francisco based DJ/producer J-Boogie. DJ Manny and DJ Orion also spun as attendees danced the night away. Austin Vida photographer Kristie Bocanegra was in attendance Saturday to capture photos from the party.

The next Night Fever showcase will be a Halloween edition on October  28 at Beauty Bar. Visit www.thenightfeveraustin.blogspot.com for more details.
