[6/5] Preview: Los Palominos at OK Corral

Los PalominosTonight, OK Corral breaks in their live Tejano lineup with Los Palominos. The popular Uvalde-based family band known for their vocal harmonies and fusion of various south Texas styles will make their debut at the South Side Tejano night spot, much to the delight of their die-hard fans.

Since forming in the mid-1980s, the Arreola brothers have enjoyed great success with the unique sound and strong songwriting. Led by Johnny and James, they scored their first big hit with the cumbia “Corazon de Cristal” at the height of Tejano’s popularity in the 1990s. Los Palominos finished out the decade riding high with Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album for 1999’s Por Eso Te Amo.

Tragedy struck the tightly-knit band in 2001 when a tour bus accident killed their drummer, brother Jesse. The group was able to overcome this tragic loss with brother Julio taking over on drums and have continued to record and perform all over the country. They won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for 2006’s Evoluciones, and their latest album, Strait Tejano, an album full of exquisite Tejano arrangements of George Strait classics, was released in December.

Long story short: Be prepared for a sound that reflects a little of Ramon Ayala-inspired NorteƱo, accordion-driven and keyboard-embellished Tejano, and even some hardcore South Texas Conjunto, complete with some of the genre’s most perfect harmonies. And there will be more than a few Palomino-ized George Strait gems.

On another note: It’s good to see that the owners of Tejano Ranch didn’t miss a beat in relocating to another place so soon! It’s also good to see Chris “Tejanoman” Tristan back in the mix along with fellow DJ’s Dee Nice and DJ Torito. Fans should also be on the lookout for DJ Romeo on Saturday nights too.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 all night. 18+ are welcome.
