[4/17] Preview: Conjunto Romo and Lucky Joe at Tejano Ranch

Conjunto Romo posterFriday, Apr. 17, will be all about the squeezebox at Tejano Ranch. The north Austin Tejano club will welcome back Kyle’s own conjunto powerhouse Conjunto Romo, but will also present Mission, TX – based phenom Lucky Joe.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

Speaking of the Valley, accordionist Lucky Joe will be making his Austin debut that evening. After gigging here and there for nearly 20 years with a variety of different groups, Lucky Joe earned the Best New Artist – Male trophy at 2014 Tejano Music Awards. This performance in Austin will also serve as a CD release party for Lucky Joe and his band’s latest release on Freddie Records, Muchacha Bonita, with several shows scheduled all over the Lone Star State.

Long story short: Squeezebox-squeezebox-squeezebox. Stacy Adams. Suits. Dresses. Polkas. This classy crowd is will pack the dance floor with the intricate partner dances that are the norm at conjunto clubs in San Antonio and further south. It’s also good to see some new blood at Austin’s biggest Tejano club – something I hope to see more of and write more about.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 10 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. For more information, call 512-834-2640.
