[1/24] Preview: ¡Revolución! Dance Party! at Flamingo Cantina

Los Federales Jan 24Tonight marks the second night of this sort of unofficial Latin music weekend for popular 6th street venue Flamingo Cantina. While last night’s show leaned towards more traditional (mostly) Spanish language music, tonight’s showcase takes it up a notch by going reggae-ska. Remember, this is how Flamingo Cantina made its name after all.

The show kicks off with a non-Latino opener in Benny Versus The Best. The Austin-based ska band is a veteran in the scene that formed in 2008. They released their debut self-titled album in 2011 before taking a brief hiatus, returning to action in 2013. The band is currently working on their second album which is scheduled for release late this year. Benny Versus The Beast performs at 9:30 p.m.

Austin-based reggae/ska band Los Kurados perform at the 11 p.m. slot. The high energy ska band sing in Spanish but can be enjoyed by all. Expect popular covers from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs along with original music. Los Kurados perform at 11 p.m.

Closing the night’s showcase are Austin-based group Los Federales. Formerly known as Ex-Machina, the group is fronted Mexican national Blas Moreno. The group describes their music as “a dynamic blend of upbeat reggae and Afro-Cuban rhythms with prog-rock and punk sensibilities.” Throw in a little psychedelic touch with bilingual lyrics and that pretty much sums up their sound. See Los Federales perform at 12:30.

The Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
