El Paso’s Radio La Chusma is coming back to Austin on Thursday night to perform at their home away from home, Flamingo Cantina. What will be their first Austin performance of 2013, the group is doing it big with Lake Charles, Louisiana-based Ashes of Babylon. The fusion of sounds filling the air should be more than enough to keep you groovin’ to da riddems.
Ashes of Babylon are a roots reggae band with a mellow but full sound. The 8-piece band blends elements of jazz, funk, hop hop and soul to go along with the reggae at their nucleus. Branded “Louisiana Reggae” by some, Ashes of Babylon are one of those bands you must hear live to get the full experience.
Self described as a cumbia-reggae-rock band, Radio La Chusma exemplifies the border vibe that only a border city band could pull off in a reggae band. The group even adds four part harmonies and violin solos. While they are certainly not the first band to fuse reggae with Latin rhythms, Radio La Chusma do it well.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 East 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. $5 cover at the door.
