The weekend is here and it is time for some Cilantro Boombox to spice up your Friday night. The Austin-based world fusion group headlines tonight at Flamingo Cantina. Tonight would be a good time to catch them before they take a short break from playing shows due to member Félix Pacheco and his wife Kat expecting their first child soon.
Cilantro Boombox’s sound incorporates elements of hip hop, afrobeat, funk, soul and electronica. The group features touring and studio members of Ocote Soul Sounds, Black Joe Lewis and Hard Proof Afrobeat. In September Cilantro Boombox released their self-titled debut album that was produced by Pacheco and mixed by Grammy winner Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma fame.
Joining Cilantro Boombox will be Austin-based Bamako Airlines. The Afro-pop group is composed of eight veteran musicians with backgrounds in a variety of genres, all of whom are drawn to the polyrhythmic, electric nature of Afro-pop. Look for their debut EP out in December.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 East 6th Street. 21+ welcome. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $7. Visit the Facebook event page here. DJ Dan Singh will be spinning in between sets.
