Looking for some good Rock en Español or Latin Alternative in Austin but don’t know where to find it? If so, look no further than Ruta Maya on Thursday night as three of Austin’s best bands take the stage for the July installment of Movimiento Rockero showcase.
Vitera opens the show with their blend of modern rock and Latin rhythms. The Spanglish lyrics sung by frontman and rock violinist Haydn Vitera, the band’s sound is reminiscent of the ’80s Rock en Español and ’90s alternative eras. Performing in support of their latest album ¡Súbete!, Vitera takes the stage at 9:00pm.
Austin’s Latino gypsy-punks, La Guerrilla, follow Vitera. Unafraid to mix genres or sounds into their music, La Guerrilla is difficult to classify as anything other than just “awesome.” Those of you who have attended our showcases know that La Guerrilla is made for the big stage and get people dancing if they weren’t already. La Guerrilla perform at 10:30pm.
Closing the showcase is Austin’s Rock en Español purists, Kalua. Their music fuses American modern rock with Spanish lyrics, creating a classic ’80s Rock en Español sound with a modern edge. After a brief hiatus in 2010, the band has since regrouped with frontman Juan Díaz’s younger brother Sam Díaz on guitar. Stay late as Kalua takes the stage at midnight.
