On Friday, Feb. 11, fans of Latin rhythms and Brazilian funk should be at Flamingo Cantina for one of the best local Latin music showcases put together this far north of South America.
Austin’s own Os Alquimistas open the night at 10:00pm with their traditional Brazilian rhythms mixed with good ole’ funk. A regular performer at Momo’s World Music Night residency on Tuesday nights, we first saw Os Alquimistas at Xemumba Fest in 2009. We’ve been following the band ever since and even caught their opening set with Grupo Fantasma last year that featured a horn section. Check out Os Alquimistas and get lost in the sounds of Brazil.
After Os Alquimistas, Austin’s own La Guerrilla plays at 11:00pm. Fusing together the best sounds of ska, traditional Latin music, indie and soul, La Guerrilla is truly an original and a must see live. The band has been featured on Austin Vida showcases in 2010 and performed all over town with bands both Latin and non. Be ready to jump around and dance.
Finally, the night’s bill concludes with a return to Brazilian sounds with Frederico 7 & the Hashashin. The group features the frontman Frederico of Os Alquimistas. They are a great way to wind down and close the night. The more melodic and soulful Brazilian compliment to Os Alquimistas, Frederico 7 perform at 12:15am.
Doors open at 9:00pm. Cover is $7. 21+ are welcome. The Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 East 6th Street. Watch a live medley of Os Alquimistas we filmed in 2009 at Xemumba Fest in East Austin here:
