Chris Pérez Project headlines Austin Vida “Rock en Español” Free Week Showcase

Free Week is an annual local live music love fest for Austin Music fans. Most live music venues throughout the city waive their normal cover charge from January 1-8 and allow people to check out bands for FREE. It began at Emo’s many moons ago and has become an epic musical festival in its own right. Last year we at Austin Vida made history with the first ever Latino showcase at Stubb’s.

This year we are presenting multiple showscases of different genres and at different venues. Our goal is to not only to provide Latino bands and musicians a legitimate Free Week presence, but also thank our many Austin Vida readers for their continued support. Our signature Free Week showcase will be our Rock en Español showcase on January 6. Headlining our showcase and performing in Austin for the first time in Austin since Pachanga Fest in 2009, is the incredible Grammy Award winning group, Chris Pérez Project.

While many will know and recognize Pérez as the widower to Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, Chris Pérez is an icon in his own right. In addition to winning a Grammy Award in 2000, Pérez has a reputation for being one of the best guitarists in music. After taking a short hiatus from recording or releasing new material under his own name for a few years, Pérez teamed up with Austin based rock artist Angel Ferrer (formerly of Ill Camino) and formed a new band after the two met in 2005. They are now gearing up to hit the road in 2012 with some new music beginning with our showcase on January 6.

We’ve built a great supporting cast for Chris Pérez Project. Co-headlining will be Austin-based “Indie en Español” group, Maneja Beto. While the word “indie” is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing the band’s music, their fusion of cumbia, electronica and ambient-indie with rock has been a crowd pleaser in Austin for many years.

Austin Rock en Español band Kalua will open the show and be followed by Vitera.  Show up early and be ready to hang out all night as capacity is limited. Join us for this showcase and our other Free Week showcases throughout the first week of January.
