Latinitas’ Día de las Madres essay contest recognizes mothers

Oh mothers, they’re the women who bear everything their children do from the moment they hear their baby’s first high-pitched scream and change diapers without a slight trace of a wince and who with love and care watch each of their child’s every step. With the day celebrating these super women fast approaching, Latinitas hosts a Día de las Madres essay contest to honor the women who have inspired and influenced us.

Through an essay or another creative outlet, girls’ ages 9-19 years have the opportunity to describe how their mother or mother like figure such as an older sister, grandmother, stepmother is a role model. Nine-to-12 year olds need to submit a 300-word essay or an original piece of artwork while girls 13-19 years have to write a 500-word essay or can create a two-minute video on the same topic.

Latinitas will choose two winners from each age category whose entries will be featured on the website and names will be announced at an Austin City Council meeting in May. Prizes include a dinner for two at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, movie tickets for two at the Alamo Drafthouse, and two tickets to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Seaworld San Antonio. All entries are due by Monday April 30 and can be submitted electronically at [email protected] or mailed to Latinitas, 1107 S. 8th St. Austin, TX 78704.

As usual, Latinitas, the non-profit webzine for and by young Latinas, provides another opportunity for girls to express themselves and gain confidence. The contest is an additional outlet the organization uses to empower young Latinas through media and technology using media enriching programs, summer camps and after-school programs.
